Wilmette Imaging Facility
Advocate Imaging Specialists
Wilmette, IL

Challenges
Advocate Imaging Specialists asked Jensen & Halstead and Studio One Design to transform a retail storefront into a state-of-the-art Imaging Facility. It was important for the facility to have an aesthetic appeal as well as a professional appearance to assure patients that they are not only being treated respectfully, but also receiving the best medical technology and attention that is available.

Solutions
The soothing spa-like atmosphere begins in the waiting room with an open, two-story space lined with windows for natural light. Live plants shield views of the parking lot outside. The space is finished with warm bamboo floors and a 'Living Wall' - a large wall feature that is animated by subtle light changes, revealing a pattern in the artwork. A concierge desk replaces the traditional office reception area with nearby frosted glass-enclosed Consultation Rooms available for private discussions. With patient experience at the forefront of the discussions, the team created a flow which stressed the concepts of patient privacy, ease of use, comfort and peace of mind. Locating all staff work areas and clinical modules out of the public zones allows patients to move freely about the space without having to encounter the clinical and technical elements until they have been properly acclimated to the environment. The attention to detail and personal awareness of the patients' needs makes them feel comfortable and at ease during a stressful time.

The "Transformation Room" replaces the traditional changing room in this facility and is used not only for the patient to change clothes, but also to wait privately and mentally prepare for their procedure in a comfortable environment. These rooms are furnished with soft materials and soothing colors, along with personal amenities to further enhance the experience. Once changed, the patient can go directly into the Modality Room for their procedure without going through any public spaces. Upon entering the Modality Room, the levels of lighting are adjusted, the patient's selection of soothing music begins to play and moving images are projected on the wall. This technology, developed by Philips, provides for personalization, leaving the patient less intimidated by the procedures and equipment.
